I have just had another birthday (37). I am single and live alone in Perth, Western Australia where I am completing a PhD. I moved here from Melbourne; where all my immediate family reside, to study seven years ago. Due to my weight, I felt I was going to burst at the seams! I started Cambridge for a multitude of reasons really, however I guess the main one was that everything was out of control. Post graduate study certainly wasn’t what I anticipated and whenever I got overly stressed or didn’t cope with a situation, I ate my feelings – which it turns out I was very good at it!

Things spiralled out of control; emotionally, eating didn’t help and although most (including myself) would consider me a pretty positive person I often internalised anger, insecurities and feelings of failure and this just wasn’t who I wanted to be. I had obviously tried an assortment of crazy, unsustainable diet that popped into my head. I don’t do well with the pressure of weighing in with a crowd nor did I like the group environment. Cambridge is strict and tough and very black and white and this suited me. I also got very lucky with Niki (Kendrick) who has been a rock and answered a constant barrage of questions about the diet!My chances of developing type-2 diabetes, having a stroke or a heart attack have exponentially decreased. Prior to commencing Cambridge my cholesterol was worryingly high; a result of the close personal relationship I developed with butter since moving to Perth. Suffice to say we have since gone our separate ways! My cholesterol is now perfect and my doctor can’t believe the impact the diet has had on it. She certainly wasn’t expecting such a dramatic improvement and although sceptical when I started, she can’t believe my transformation.

Although being leaner was never going to make me magically happy, taking back some control of your life is empowering and in my case has given me strength and helped me regain the confidence and commitment I need to finish university. If along the way a better version of me emotionally begins to surface, then I think that can only be a good thing.
