Spice Up Your Life

Looking for an easy option that keeps you on plan? Why not try something different for you and the family tonight. This week I have been using a lot more spice in my dishes and discovered delicious sumac. Sumac comes from a middle eastern berry, and when mixed with a combination of spices it can be used as a tasty meat seasoning. Why not experiment for yourself, here is one of the recipes that I have tried with this spice.

Middle Eastern Meatballs with Za’atar and Mint Yoghurt

Suitable for step 2


  • 500g lean beef mince
  • Drizzle of Oil
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley
  • 2 tbsp chopped mint
  • 1tsp ground cumin
  • 1tsp black pepper


  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 3 tbsp ground sumac
  • 2 tbsp thyme
  • 2 tbsp dried marjoram
  • 2 tbsp dried oregano


To make the Za’atar, toast the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan over medium heat for 4-5mins, stirring regularly, add all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until it forms a powder.

To make the meatballs, place all ingredients and 2 tsp of za’atar in a large bowl, mix together well, so the flavourings are evenly distributed. Roll into small balls and flatten them slightly. Heat a pan or grill to medium high drizzle with oil, cook meatballs for 2 minutes on each side or until charred on the outside.

Serve the meatballs wrapped in lettuce leaves with a small spoonful of mint yoghurt.
