Benefits of Walking

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Combined with a healthy diet walking 30 minutes a day, the health benefits are increased cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improves management of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, strengthens bones and muscles, reduces stress and uplifts mood. It can also reduce developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers.

Walking is low impact, and can be done at any time of the day and at your own pace, even a little bit each day can benefit your health. If it’s too difficult to walk for 30 minutes at one time, why not try small walks of 10 minutes each a few times per day and as your health improves you can gradually build up to longer sessions. Remember to increase your water intake when you are walking.

There are many ways to build up your physical activity into your daily lifestyle why not trying some of these:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift
  • Walk to the local shops
  • Get off public transport one stop earlier and walk to and from work
  • Walk the dog

Wear a pedometer or Fitbit to track your steps and see if you can beat them each day, there are some really great apps that you can get on your phone that tracks your steps.

How many steps can you do?
